A Soft Survival Guide for When the Nervous System Hijacks You

The Storm Outside, the Storm Within
It started as a low rumble — thunder off in the distance.
But inside, my chest tightened. I checked the weather app. Again. And again.
The house was quiet, but my nervous system was screaming.
Most people wouldn’t think twice.
But my body remembered the flood.
Not just water in the garage — but the panic, the helplessness, the chaos.
That storm wasn’t just outside. It was still in me.
And so, I learned how to talk myself through it.
Storytime: The Garage That Flooded
A storm years ago flooded our garage — fast and hard.
Everything felt out of control. I didn’t know where to put my body or how to calm down.
And even now, when thunder rolls in, I feel like I’m back there —
Like my body is bracing for a threat that isn’t happening right now.
That’s trauma. It’s time-travel in the nervous system.
And I had to learn to gently bring myself back home.
The Sacred Talk-Down: A Nervous System Reset
Here’s what I do now.
Maybe you’ll save this for the next time the storm comes — inside or out.

🌿 Okay, baby. You’re safe in this moment.
💗 Nothing is flooding. You are here now. You’ve built safety into your life.
👣 Feel your feet. Wiggle your fingers. Let’s come back to the body.
🌬️ Inhale for 2… Exhale for 4. Again. In for 2… Out for 4.
🫶🏽 We’re not in danger. We’re just remembering. And now… we’re returning.

🪶 Reparenting the Chaos
It’s not weakness. It’s wisdom.
Learning how to come back to center is what trauma healing really is.
Not being perfect — but being present again.
We don’t need to conquer the storm.
We just need a voice that says:
“You’re safe now, sweetheart. We’re not in that moment anymore.”
💬 Affirmation
I am not overreacting. I am remembering.
And now, I am gently returning.
I offer my nervous system the peace I never had.
I breathe — and come home to myself.
